In the last article, I talked about repairing the trunk and rear of my car.
In general, the condition of the trunk was normal and without repair, except for the smoky paintwork on the left side (on the inside of the rear left fender). This was the reason for the repair of the entire trunk. I could not repair only the left side and leave the rest untouched. Yes, and I chose an unusual way of repairing (restoring) all internal surfaces.
Once upon a time, I discovered anticorrosive HB BODY 951, bought one bottle and tinted rusty places at the bottom of the doors (on the inside) and the lower part of the thresholds with a brush. Anticorrosive was gray, not very conspicuous, so I did not even tint it. Yes, and how to paint? I was very far from painting business. So, after a few years, rust at the processing site no longer appeared. And now, when the question arose of how to treat fire-damaged places, I remembered this anticorrosive.
Even when restoring the left side of the body, I decided that I would cover all the burnt elements with anticorrosive. Thus, I restored the left side of the body, repaired the aforementioned trunk in the same way, and, accordingly, I decided to do the doors in the same way. Looking ahead, I’ll say that using the same technology I repaired everything else (the right side and the engine compartment), as they say, “for symmetry”.
Now let's move on to the issue of restoration of doors. As in the case of the restoration of the body and fender, the doors had to be completely cleaned of burnt paintwork. But unlike the body and wing, the doors had to be tinkered with. The presence of internal cavities slowed down the work. Nevertheless, I cleaned everything and laundered.
The first layer, on the bare metal, I applied the acid primer HB BODY 960. The second and third layers I applied two layers of the primer-filler HB BODY 634. And after that I applied anticorrosive.
After all the layers had dried thoroughly, I started grinding the soil on the outer surface.
After grinding, there was one nuance. During the removal of the old paintwork, I tried to use a tool (liquid) to remove the paintwork, and apparently the remnants of this tool were poorly washed off with water. I come to the garage a few days later and see a picture, the primer on the lower edge of the outer surface of the doors has peeled off. I had to wash this place more thoroughly, re-sand, cover with primers and grind. Be careful with such liquids!
I repaired the doors of the right side in the same way, but I did not clean anything off, but simply washed all the dirt well and lightly sanded it for adhesion. I did not touch the outer surface, I did only the inner surfaces. I painted the outer surfaces when all the elements (doors, trunk lid and hood) were in place.
That's all. Until next articles.
